FAQs before selecting any Biometric devices

Now-a-days Biometric Attendance Systems has removed every other conventional methods of attendance management. Almost in every office, corporate, buildings and premises, biometric systems are installed for security purposes and attendance management. Biometric systems are growing rapidly only because they are considered more secure than conventional security systems. After all, biometrics technology uses intrinsic human characteristics such as fingerprints, facial characteristics, iris or retinas and many others; and it is more difficult to steal or duplicate a fingerprint than it is to do the same with a key or a password.

But before implementing any biometric system, we have to clarify certain query. So, here are some frequently asked questions:-

1. Can fingerprints be stolen or copied from biometric database?

Absolutely NOT. Fingerprint templates are stored in the database. Only a tiny subset of the characteristics of the fingerprint is extracted and stored in the template when the finger is scanned. The templates stored in the database hold enough information to verify the finger presented is yours when your finger is scanned in the future but the entire image of the fingerprint is not stored so there is no way to copy or steal fingerprints from the database.

2. Can Biometric Systems be fooled with replica fingerprints?

No, because fingerprints are never exactly the same due to human factors. The fingerprints will be similar enough to identify individuals when scanned but if an exact replica of a previously scanned fingerprint is scanned again, the biometric system will know it and deny access.

3. What is the enrollment capacity of biometric systems?

When authorized users are enlisted in the database, they are said to be enrolled. So depending on the system capacity, the number of enrollments can be done. It can be from 1000-25000 finger templates. And also 5 Lac transaction can be stored.

4. How quickly can a fingerprint be identified by a biometric system?

The acceptance and rejection rate of fingerprints depend on many factors. The speed of the processing power of the machine and other factor is the number of fingerprint template stored in the database. On an average identification varies from 1 Sec to 3 seconds.

5. Will wet finger affect fingerprint scanner?

Generally no, but one is advised to use dry finger fir faster acceptance. The fingerprint sensor used in the devices is basically scratching less and identifies the finger with maximum accuracy.

6. Will it work after a power failure?

Yes, definitely, because devices have battery back-up of around 48 hours. Also few devices have some lower back-up. But overall, biometric devices are the perfect choice for attendance system.

7. How long the data can be stored in the device without connectivity to the server?

Depending on the capacity of the memory. Though more than 5 lacs transactions can be stored in the single device.

8. Are these devices capable of real time data processing?

Yes, obviously, because devices feature data push technology, which sends the data as soon as it is fed with it. This real time data processing makes systems more fast, accurate and reliable.

9. What are the connectivity modes?

The Biometric devices are incorporated with advanced and recent technologies. So these devices can be connected to the server through WI-Fi, GPRS and LAN depending on the location and connectivity source.

So you can see biometric technology is quite advanced. The systems are already quite accurate and difficult to fool. And as with most emerging technologies, biometric systems are advancing at a rapid rate so get used to them. It may not be long until you have a biometric security system installed in your office.

Improvements in Biometrics - Boon for Industry

The World of Biometrics is changing rapidly with implementations of new technologies. If we consider the biometrics technology few years ago, we will find the usage and application with features were limited. But now-a-days many modern technologies are implemented which has made it a part of our day-to-day life. From office to corporate buildings to security zones, everywhere it plays a vital role.

Biometrics is not only limited to attendance machine, but it can be used for access control and other applications like canteen management, gym management and visitor management. Star Link India has implemented and updated its systems and solutions according to the latest trend with upcoming advancements. Through this blog, I would like to focus on few major improvements, done by Star Link India. These changes and updations in their devices/machines and softwares have created a kind of boon in the industry. These updations are user specific and make the systems and solutions more versatile in uses.

1. GPRS/Wi-Fi connectivity: Looking at the complexities in LAN wiring and connectivity, Star Link made their systems based on GPRS and Wi-Fi. Now, the attendance devices can also be connected to the server through GPRS and Wi-Fi, which allows it to use in far-off areas where there is no source of LAN connectivity. Now, the usage of these machines is increasing more and more as it can be used anywhere without worrying for its connectivity.

2. Camera for double verification: To cross verify the presence of the employee and stop the proxy punching, a camera is installed on the devices. As, sometimes other employees use the other's card to mark attendance, but now the use of the camera in the device helps to cross verify the attendance of employee by clicking his/her image while punching.

3. Touch screen device: In the era of touch screen smartphones, Star Link India developed the touchscreen attendance device. The touch screen sensitivity helps easier user interface.

4. Data Push Technology: Earlier the data were to be fetched on a regular basis. But looking at the usage, Data Push Technology has been implemented which pushes the data (like punching details) from the machine to the server as soon as the punching is done. This has helped with the fast processing of data and records, reducing time loss.

5. Printer incorporated into the machine: The Industrial Device used for Canteen Management System, is featured with the printer. While placing the order you have to show your Card, which verifies your identity and thus a coupon is generated through the machine. The printer works after your identity is verified and if you want to print manually, it's not possible.

6. Web-based software: Earlier the Time Office Software, Visitor Management Software, Leave Management System and Data Capture software were window based, so they were limited to the number of PCs. But now these softwares are available in Web-based, which allows the user to access the software from any part of the world with internet enable devices. This major change has really helped a lot to maintain the records of employees from any part.

7. Card Recharge option for Canteen Management System: A recent implementation in the canteen management system is card recharge options. This allows the employees to recharge their smart cards with certain denominations. Now every time the employees use that card for availing the service of the canteen, the amount is deducted from that card.

8. Some of other unique solutions: Looking at the demands and needs of the clients, Star Link India developed few solutions which were unique in itself. They are Gym management system, Tea Garden Solutions, SMS Solutions and Online/Offline Canteen management System.

Lastly, Star Link India is still trying to implement some more technologies in their systems and solutions which will be fruitful for the industry. We aim to incorporate latest technologies to match up with the recent trend in the market. So, if you are planning to update your systems and solutions, get Star Link India is the right choice.

Aadhar Based Attendance System - How it Operates?

Punctuality is the main word focused by our PM Narendra Modi for every government employee. To streamline employees of government sectors PM insisted to install Aadhar based Attendance Machine in the office premises. This helped a lot as employees started coming on time to prevent late marks on their attendance records. Also, an online website www.attendance.gov.in was launched, so that employees can view their attendance status.

But How the Aadhar basedAttendance System works and what are its advantages and disadvantages. In this blog, I will discuss each and everything and let you know how this whole attendance system works and what steps should be taken to make the whole system more effective and reliable.

How Aadhar Based Attendance System marks, attendance?

Every used have to register their details in the database. In the process of enrollment one has entered his/her complete details, department, and the picture is taken to store for further authentication. Then, after registration, a request is generated which is Approved by the Help desk. After approval one is ready to mark his/her attendance through this system.

Now, while marking attendance, the employee enters his/her last few digits of Aadhar card, then they put their fingers. After that, it takes 30 Sec to 8 minutes to validate. Aadhar mapped against the ID and fingerprint is sent to the Aadhar Authentication server. On valid authentication, attendance record stored on the server.
On the basis of these attendance records, daily reports are also generated department wise.

Working of Hardware and Software

The complete attendance system is made with various complexities. A tablet is used, which have USB drive is connected to a USB fingerprint scanner (STQC certified). An application which is windows based or android based is installed on the tablet.
For the internet connectivity, a WI-fi access point near the system should be installed. The Attendance machine is connected to the Centralized Attendance Server, where as the Centralized Attendance Server is connected to Aadhar Authentication Server.

The Complexities in hardware and software increases the response time. Also, a tablet is used instead of proper biometric device which almost changes the whole concept of attendance device. A tablet is not made for this kind of applications.
If there is Power failure, the system can run up to 1 hour to 2 hours as the application installed in it always runs and the backlight is always on, which reduces the battery backup.

What can be done to increase its efficiency?

Any industrial devices should be installed, which can run on android platform so that it can easily run the software and other applications.
Also, caching should be done to reduce the response time.
And, multiple server should be installed for load balancing.
